When Zuleyka Rivera Mendoza, the newly crowned Miss. Universe, fainted on stage, she was likely squeezed by her tight dress and dehydrated from the bright lights.
Dehydration is more common than we think. Thirst is a symptom of dehydration as is dry mouth, decrease urination, and dizziness. If we do not pay attention to these early signs, we could pass out.
Our bodies are 60 percent water, and on average we require 2.4 liters or 82 fluid ounces or 82 adult gulps (we tested this measurement and it is fairly accurate). We lose water through sweat, tears, urine, and stool. We gain water through food and fluid intake.
However, all fluids are not equal. Water is good because it replenishes the needed fluid deficiency. Gatorade is better because it replenishes both salt and water. Coffee and beer are poor, because they stimulate the body to urinate more, hence resulting in a net loss of fluids
When we exercise, our fluid requirements go up as much as 7 to 10 fluid ounces for every 10 to 20 minutes of activity and much more when we are outside.
The Institute of Medicine recommends that, “…men consume roughly 3.0 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day…”
Most of us do not have to fear being under bright stage lights or wearing a tight beaded dress and winning the Mr. or Miss Universe contest, but we do need to walk, work, and exercise in the Memphis summer heat. So drink up!
